Summary

"The Geographical Distribution of Animals, Volume 2" by Alfred Russel Wallace, examines the animal life in different areas of the world and how it all connectes back to the history of our planet. The book takes us to the Neotropical region, like South America, to show off its amazing variety of animals. Wallace talks a lot about which animals live where, especially mammals and birds, offering ideas as to why they're found in certain spots because of the way the land and climate have changed over long periods of time. By comparing creatures that are alive now with those that are extinct, the pages reveal clues about how the Earth's surface has shifted and transformed over vast stretches of time.

About the Author

Alfred Russel Wallace was an English naturalist, explorer, geographer, anthropologist, biologist and illustrator. He independently conceived the theory of evolution through natural selection; his 1858 paper on the subject was published that year alongside extracts from Charles Darwin's earlier writings on the topic. It spurred Darwin to set aside the "big species book" he was drafting and quickly write an abstract of it, which was published in 1859 as On the Origin of Species.
