Summary

"Sandra Belloni — Volume 3" by George Meredith is a book that looks at tough topics like love, wanting to get ahead, and what society expects, all through the problems faced by Wilfrid Pole and Emilia Belloni. The story happens mostly at home, where the characters deal with their feelings and problems, especially how hard it is for young people to find happiness and who they are. At the beginning, Wilfrid is unsure about his relationship with Lady Charlotte Chillingworth but also has feelings for Emilia Belloni. He thinks a lot about what he feels and how society influences him, especially when it comes to love. Emilia really wants Wilfrid to notice her and hopes to become a musician. You also have Mr. Pericles, who wants to help Emilia with her music, and Lady Charlotte, who makes things even more complicated for Wilfrid. This part of the book really shows how hard it is to balance what you want with what society expects, setting the stage for the drama that's about to happen in their lives.

About the Author

George Meredith was an English novelist and poet of the Victorian era. At first, his focus was poetry, influenced by John Keats among others, but Meredith gradually established a reputation as a novelist. The Ordeal of Richard Feverel (1859) briefly scandalised Victorian literary circles. Of his later novels, the most enduring is The Egoist (1879), though in his lifetime his greatest success was Diana of the Crossways (1885). His novels were innovative in their attention to characters' psychology, and also portrayed social change. His style, in both poetry and prose, was noted for its syntactic complexity; Oscar Wilde likened it to "chaos illumined by brilliant flashes of lightning". Meredith was an encourager of other novelists, as well as an influence on them; among those to benefit were Robert Louis Stevenson and George Gissing. Meredith was nominated for the Nobel Prize in Literature seven times.
