Summary

"The Man in Black: An Historical Novel of the Days of Queen Anne" by G. P. R. James is a tale set in the time of Queen Anne, revolving around the young Philip Hastings whose life takes a dramatic turn when his brother tragically drowns, setting off a chain of events that impacts his family and community. The story begins by introducing the reader to Philip as a thoughtful teen studying Latin in a gloomy old house with Dr. Paulding, a strict clergyman who acts as his guardian and teacher. The narrative quickly presents the devastating news of Arthur’s death, delivered by Dr. Paulding, which is a moment that changes everything for Philip. As Philip deals with this loss, the beginning of the story lays out the concepts of family responsibilities, dealing with what is expected, and the twists of fate that will define the rest of his life, all within a historical setting.
