Summary

"The Guns of Europe" by Joseph A. Altsheler is a historical fiction novel set at the very start of World War I, following young American John Scott as his European travels with his tutor, Mr. Anson, are interrupted by the war. As they journey through Europe, what begins as an artistic and cultural exploration quickly turns grim as whispers of mobilization and the brewing conflict between Austria-Hungary and Servia fill the air. The narrative mixes John's personal experiences with themes of duty and resolve against the backdrop of rising nationalism as he experiences hints of the war, and growing tension in the world on the brink of chaos.
