Summary

"Simon the Jester" by William John Locke is a story about Simon de Gex, a member of Parliament, who, after learning he doesn't have long to live, decides to escape to a lonely, depressing town by the sea. There, away from his political life, Simon thinks deeply about everything he's done, the love in his life, and the goals he now has to give up, all while trying to keep a sense of humor about his situation. Upon arriving in this dismal town, encouraged by his friend Renniker, Simon starts to look at life differently, questioning what it all means. He talks about being engaged to Eleanor Faversham, a woman he cares deeply about, but feels he can't marry because of his sickness. With a mix of smart humor and serious thinking, Simon begins a journey to understand himself and find happiness in the time he has left.
