Summary

"The Crayon Papers" by Washington Irving is a compilation of sketches from the 1800s, told through Geoffrey Crayon’s perspective. Crayon shares his thoughts and experiences on a range of topics in the book, from his own life to social happenings and exciting stories. The collection starts with "Mountjoy", looking back at the narrator's happy childhood filled with imagination in the countryside, near the Hudson River. Growing up with a relaxed father and creative sisters, he listened to old stories that filled him with a desire for adventure. His days were spent exploring nature, dreaming of the world, all of which shaped the romantic way he would see the world.

About the Author

Washington Irving was an American short-story writer, essayist, biographer, historian, and diplomat of the early 19th century. He wrote the short stories "Rip Van Winkle" (1819) and "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow" (1820), both of which appear in his collection The Sketch Book of Geoffrey Crayon, Gent. His historical works include biographies of Oliver Goldsmith, Muhammad, and George Washington, as well as several histories of 15th-century Spain that deal with subjects such as the Alhambra, Christopher Columbus, and the Moors. Irving served as American ambassador to Spain in the 1840s.
