Summary

"The Strife of the Sea" by T. Jenkins Hains is a collection of stories set around the ocean, where humans and animals face challenges and victories. The stories highlight how living and non-living creatures are connected and depend on each other. For instance, in one story the readers meet an old pelican near Sand Key Light, who embodies the spirit of the ocean and his daily struggle for survival. The pelican, has regular interactions with Sandy Shackford, the lighthouse keeper, but then must deal with a pair of eagles, which establishes a setting full of adventure while recognizing the natural world has difficulties. This represents the ever present battle between nature and legacy.
