Summary

"Of the Decorative Illustration of Books Old and New" by Walter Crane is a detailed look at how art in books has changed and what makes it important, written over a century ago. This book looks closely at the different kinds of art used to decorate books, from old hand-painted books to newer printed pictures. The book aims to show how art and stories are connected and how book design has changed over time. The start of the book explains how design, art, and writing are all linked and how art is tied to human ideas and history. Illustrations in books let us see the culture and society of different times. Crane points out that while decoration was more important at some points in history, illustrators are being recognized more and more as time passes. Understanding the history and our own experiences is vital to understanding how book decoration has grown and changed, which leads into the book's examination of this art form.

About the Author

Walter Crane was an English artist and book illustrator. He is considered to be the most influential, and among the most prolific, children's book creators of his generation and, along with Randolph Caldecott and Kate Greenaway, one of the strongest contributors to the child's nursery motif that the genre of English children's illustrated literature would exhibit in its developmental stages in the later 19th century.
