Summary

"The Heart's Highway: A Romance of Virginia in the Seventeenth Century" by Mary Eleanor Wilkins Freeman is a story that dives into romance and society's rules through young Mary Cavendish and Harry Wingfield, her tutor, who's also a former convict. Set in the 1600s, the book looks at how people acted back then, especially when it came to class and race. Right away, we see Mary, and her tutor, Wingfield, going to church in Jamestown. Even though he doesn't have a good reputation because of his past, Wingfield can't help but admire Mary. As they travel, they admire the world around them in Virginia. Tension grows because Wingfield is "lower class". Mary is spirited and likes to do things her way, like when she goes to see her family's ship after its trip. As they meet sailors and talk about what's happening to them and in the world, it's clear their relationship will be tricky, with problems coming from all sides, including their own feelings for each other.
