Summary

"Diary of Samuel Pepys — Volume 59: November 1667" by Samuel Pepys is a historical journal from the 1600s that chronicles England’s Restoration era right after the Civil War. Pepys, a naval official, wrote this diary that tells about his daily happenings in London, along with his opinions on the politics around him. Centered on the month of November in 1667, the diary unveils the political chaos, like the charges against powerful people such as Lord Chancellor Clarendon. Pepys shares stories about talking with political leaders such as Sir W. Coventry and the Duke of York. Throughout the month, Pepys goes to shows, talks about navy issues, and deals with the stress in Parliament as they discuss carelessness accusations toward naval leaders. Pepys blends his personal experiences with public matters, capturing the exciting political activities and general mood of England's Restoration.

About the Author

Samuel Pepys was an English diarist and naval administrator. He served as administrator of the Royal Navy and Member of Parliament, but is most remembered today for the diary he kept for almost a decade. Though he had no maritime experience, Pepys rose to be the Chief Secretary to the Admiralty under both King Charles II and King James II through patronage, diligence, and his talent for administration. His influence and reforms at the Admiralty were important in the early professionalisation of the Royal Navy.
