Summary

"A System of Logic, Ratiocinative and Inductive (Vol. 1 of 2)" by John Stuart Mill is a deep exploration of the science behind how we know what we know, probably from the 1800s. It focuses on organizing existing thoughts about logic and reasoning, instead of introducing all new ideas; it explains how logic is the foundation for scientific thinking and how we understand the world around us. The book starts with introductions that tell us what the author wants to achieve, and the author highlights how important language is to logic, as the words we choose and how we use them impact how we think. It builds a base to look at how language shapes our comprehension of what is true and what we can know, getting ready to present principles in later chapters.

About the Author

John Stuart Mill was an English philosopher, political economist, politician and civil servant. One of the most influential thinkers in the history of liberalism, he contributed widely to social theory, political theory, and political economy. Dubbed "the most influential English-speaking philosopher of the nineteenth century" by the Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy, he conceived of liberty as justifying the freedom of the individual in opposition to unlimited state and social control.
