Summary

"The Psychology of the Poet Shelley" by Edward Carpenter is a study of Percy Bysshe Shelley through the perspective of early 20th-century psychology, exploring his character using modern theories of emotion and sex. The book considers how love, longing, and emotional struggles may be viewed as influences found in Shelley's works. Carpenter starts by pointing out how earlier analyses of Shelley often missed a chance to bring together Shelley’s feminine traits, idealized love concepts, and gender complexities. The book discusses how these traits influenced his poetry. It establishes an exploration of the effects of Shelley’s relationships on his mindset and shows the link between his emotional status and his expressive writing.
