Summary

"History of the United Netherlands, 1588" by John Lothrop Motley is a history book that tells the story of the Netherlands in the late 1500s, during its fight to become independent from Spain. Written in the 1800s, the book looks at the complicated political situations and important happenings of the time, focusing on the relationships between powerful people like Queen Elizabeth I of England. The story takes place during the conflict between Spain and the Netherlands and shows how the leaders of the Netherlands and their English friends interacted and sometimes fought with each other. The book explores the arguments and disagreements among the Dutch, the important role of Count Maurice of Nassau in the fight for freedom, and the danger that Spain, under the rule of Philip II, showed. By explaining what happened in the year 1588, including when Leicester stepped down and the problems within the Dutch states, the book reveals how divides in politics affected the way wars were fought and the overall fight for independence. The history book also shines a light on how the events of this time influenced politics in Europe, particularly the clash between Catholicism and Protestantism during the Reformation.
