Summary

"Josiah's Alarm, and Abel Perry's Funeral" by Marietta Holley is a funny story from the 1800s that shows us the life of Samantha Allen and her funny views on her small-town life. The book looks at things like home life, how people get along, and the funny things that happen during big events, like getting new things for the house and funerals. First, we see Samantha and her husband, Josiah, trying to get a furnace put in, but Josiah is worried it will make the house too hot. Samantha tries to calm him down while taking care of the house. Then, the story moves to Abel Perry’s family, who are sad because their daughter's husband passed away. This part talks about being sad, family ties, and what people think about funerals. Holley's clever writing makes the characters and their problems feel real, which makes the book fun to read and shows us both the funny and hard parts of life back then.
