Summary

"Mrs. Warren's Profession" by Bernard Shaw is a play that explores tough issues about what's right and wrong in society, using the complicated relationship between a mother and daughter. The story is set in the late 1800s features Mrs. Warren, who runs brothels and believes she made the best choices she could, and her daughter, Vivie Warren, who is smart and well-educated but struggles to accept how her mother makes her living. At the start, Vivie is focused on her studies in the countryside when Praed, a friend of the family, comes to see her. We learn that Vivie is very independent and realistic, which is different from her mother. Praed is excited to see Mrs. Warren, making us think that she is interesting, but we also feel that there might be problems ahead for Vivie and her mother's past. When Mrs. Warren arrives, her lively personality and the way she interacts with Vivie suggest hidden problems about how their lives fit into society, which leads to a thought-provoking examination of morals and decisions in the rest of the play.
