Summary

"A Watch-dog of the North Sea: A Naval Story of the Great War" by Percy F. Westerman is a tale set during World War I, following the crew of the H.M.S. "Pompey," an armored cruiser, with a focus on Assistant Paymaster Eric Greenwood and his friend Ronald Tressidar as they experience the dangers and bonds of wartime at sea. The story kicks off with Eric finishing up on the ship while eagerly awaiting letters, when a close call with a enemy torpedo reminds them of the constant danger of underwater attacks. Tension rises when a new stoker, James Jorkler, arrives with secret intentions that suggest a plot against the ship and its crew. Further intrigue is added when Mr. Greenwood, Eric's father, learns about a hidden petrol depot that could greatly affect the war, setting the scene for intense action and suspense.
