Summary

"Red Spider, Volume 1 (of 2)" by S. Baring-Gould is a story set in the Devon countryside parish of Bratton Clovelly in the late 1800's, and tells of the growing conflict between Hillary Nanspian and Taverner Langford, who are brothers-in-law. The story explores the changes happening in society at the time, as well as the old, fading customs of the rural area. At first there is a friendly relationship between the two men, but their differences in character, specifically Hillary's loud nature versus Langford's quiet planning, lead to disagreements about money and their place in society, which culminates in an argument over a red spider they superstitiously believe might bring them luck. As the story begins, their quarrel starts to affect everyone around them, creating a sense of suspense about what is going to happen to the families and relationships involved.
