Summary

"The Gilded Age: A Tale of Today" by Mark Twain and Charles Dudley Warner is a sharp and funny story that throws light on America after the Civil War. It's all about how people chased money and how greedy and dishonest things got. The story kicks off with the Hawkins family, led by Squire Hawkins, wanting to find a better life in Missouri because things are tough in East Tennessee. Squire Hawkins is feeling down about his life, but a letter makes him think about moving to Missouri to try and get rich with land deals. As the Hawkins family gets ready to hit the road, they take in an orphan named Clay. This sets the scene for their adventures and shows how they deal with the chances and hard times of a country changing fast. This early part of the book really brings out what it was like to live in a time of big changes, with everyone wanting to get ahead and facing the ups and downs of life.
