Summary

"The Song of Deirdra, King Byrge and his Brothers, and Other Ballads" by George Borrow is a gathering of early 20th-century ballads from 1913 that mixes time-honored folklore stories with the concepts surrounding love, honesty, and courage. With special attention to the Celtic mythology and storytelling customs of the British Isles, Borrow's book starts with "The Song of Deirdra," which tells the unfortunate story of Deirdra, a main character stuck in a situation involving jealousy and craving that results from her emotions for Nasa, a man who ranks high in society. The ballad perfectly captures longing set against the scenery of Ireland. Similarly, "King Byrge and His Brothers" details the terrible occurrences that happened to three brothers who were tricked by a bad knight, which led to their sad deaths in a jail cell due to not having food. The book also talks about brotherhood, dependability, and how lying can have bad effects. The collection's other ballads go beyond these central ideas and looks at conflicts through many different environments, creating a tapestry of human feelings and experiences that lives on through time.
