Little Tony of Italy

"Little Tony of Italy" by Madeline Brandeis is about a young orphan named Tony in Naples, Italy, whose life changes when he adopts a stray dog named Tina. Against the wishes of Guido, the Marionette Man which is his guardian, Tony's mischievous habits of lying and playing on people's sympathy cause all sorts of trouble. Tony's adventures and his bond with Tina teach him valuable lessons regarding love, honesty, and sacrifice, particularly after a vivid dream about Pompeii's destruction. Ultimately, Tony learns the importance of honesty and friendship when he faces the difficult decision to return Tina to her owner, Anna, choosing a more honest path that promises a better life and a sense of belonging.
