"The Forty-Five Guardsmen" by Alexandre Dumas is a historical fiction novel that takes place in 16th-century France during a time of religious conflict and political unrest. The story begins with a large crowd assembled at the Porte St. Antoine, eagerly waiting to see Salcede, who has been found guilty of plotting against the Duc d'Anjou, be put to death. Amidst the excited and anxious crowd are Robert Briquet, a mysterious tall man, and Perducas, a Gascon, both of whom soon get caught up in the unfolding events. The conversations of these characters reveal deep divisions in society between those who support the royal family and those who are part of the League, a group that opposes the king. As people watch the execution with suspense and fear, themes of loyalty, deception, and social change are portrayed.
