Summary

"The Works of Henry Fielding, vol. 12" by Henry Fielding is a compilation of theatrical plays and other writings from the early 1700s. Included is the funny play "The Author's Farce," which makes fun of the theater world of that time through the interactions of writers and actors, along with "The Tragedy of Tragedies; or, The Life and Death of Tom Thumb the Great," a funny take on serious tragedies and the empty shows of society and art, with a narrative that is moved forward by the interactions of characters such as Luckless who is a writer, and his love interest, Harriot, as they navigate money problems and a crazy performance world, while the start of the collection gives a vibrant introduction to “The Author’s Farce,” setting it in Mrs. Moneywood’s home, where the main character Luckless is in a humorous confrontation with his landlady about being unable to pay rent, with witty exchanges that show Luckless's troubling situation, and the comedic relationship between him and his landlady, with Luckless's relationships with Mrs. Moneywood and other writers showing the silliness of the theater world and the difficulties artists face in early society and the start of theater culture.

About the Author

Henry Fielding was an English writer and magistrate known for the use of humour and satire in his works. His 1749 comic novel The History of Tom Jones, a Foundling was a seminal work in the genre. Along with Samuel Richardson, Fielding is seen as the founder of the traditional English novel. He also played an important role in the history of law enforcement in the United Kingdom, using his authority as a magistrate to found the Bow Street Runners, London's first professional police force.
