Summary

"Hearts of Controversy" by Alice Meynell is a compilation of essays that explores various authors and poets of the 19th century. Examining figures like Alfred Lord Tennyson and Charles Dickens, the book considers how time and perspective influence literary reputations. Meynell considers Tennyson's shifts in public and critcal opinion and distinctive poetic style. She also touches on Dickens' depiction of character and the humanity that underlines it and the works of the Brontë sisters. The collection invites readers to think critically about the elements of art and the complex forces that shape great literature.
