The Talkative Tree

They meet a tree named Johnny Ashlew, who tells them that he used to be a person. They learn he was changed by the planet's "Life," which is like a big boss for the whole environment. Kolin talks about how hard life is under the controlling rules of his home planet, Haurtoz. He begins to imagine what freedom might be like. As the story ends, Kolin makes a huge choice: to become part of the Life so he can spread the message of standing up for yourself and changing things. This involves overtaking his crew and planning to fight for change back on Haurtoz.
