"The Girls of Rivercliff School; or, Beth Baldwin's Resolve" by Amy Bell Marlowe is a story from long ago about Beth Baldwin, a young woman with big dreams of becoming a teacher. Even though her family doesn't have much money, Beth is determined to go to Rivercliff School. We meet Beth talking with her friend Mary about Larry Haven, a local boy who became a lawyer. This makes Beth think hard about her own dreams of going to Rivercliff School, which seems like it might be impossible. The story shows how much Beth wants to make her life better through education, even when people around her don't think she can because of her family's situation. It's all about Beth's strong will, the differences between rich and poor, and how important education was for girls back then.
