Summary

"Joseph II. and His Court: An Historical Novel" by L. Mühlbach is a story that unfolds in the late 19th century, during the reign of Empress Maria Theresa, diving deep into her court's political world. The book introduces us to the weighty decisions and power plays involving her ministers and trusted advisors, all while Austria stands at a crossroads. Expect a blend of power, the true meaning of loyalty, and the challenges of love set against a backdrop of political games. Beginning with a high-stakes council meeting, where Maria Theresa's cabinet members argue over Austria's possible alliances, we meet characters such as Baron von Bartenstein and Count von Uhlefeld, who believe in sticking with old alliances, while the mysterious Count Kaunitz stirs up speculation. The empress's beauty and strength contrast with the scheming and planning of her court. The chapter sets the scene for important political showdowns, and gives hints to the problems faced by the empress in her personal life, especially when it comes to her husband and juggling love and duty.
