Summary

"The Complete Essays of John Galsworthy" by John Galsworthy is a compilation of essays from the early 1900s that explores numerous subjects, such as life, art, nature, society, and what it means to be human, frequently viewed through Galsworthy's pensive and philosophical lens. It starts with thoughts on life's opposing forces and the intricacies of being, showing Galsworthy's sharp understanding of how society works and personal reflection. The beginning creates a clear image of a peaceful place where the storyteller finds a place called "Osteria di Tranquillita" on the Odyssean coast, causing deep thoughts about progress and society. Through the discussion with the inn keeper, who shows the conflict between old and new thinking, Galsworthy presents a deeper philosophical search of society and the point of people's lives. The storyteller's thoughts result in considering how connected and continuous life is, expressing both appreciation and unhappiness toward new ways and their inconsistencies, as the essays combine observational details with personal philosophy, tempting people to think about the detailed story made by people's memories and decisions.
