Summary

"The Feather Bed" by Robert Graves is a poem from the early 1900s that explores the internal struggles of a young man dealing with love, loss, and expectations from society. The story centers on the speaker's complicated feelings about Rachel, a woman he loves, who is about to become a nun. The speaker’s anger, and jealousy mix with memories of their love, as he reflects on her decision to leave the world for her faith. The poem switches back and forth between strong images and the speaker's inner thoughts to show his distress as he faces questions about faith, lost love, and his desire for Rachel. The ending looks at what love means, and how difficult it is when people separate.
