Summary

"The Sweeper of Loray" by Robert Sheckley is a science fiction story that explores the complexities of interacting with an alien culture. Set on the planet Loray, Professor Carver and his assistant Fred observe the local traditions and a unique healing liquid called sersee juice. The Earthmen become entangled in the lives of the Lorayans when Fred's actions disrupt their peaceful existence in an attempt to obtain the juice. This sets off a chain of events that challenges the scientists’ ethics when the life-altering effects of the sersee juice transform Fred, blurring the lines between scientific curiosity and moral duty. Professor Carver is then faced with a hard choice, exposing his true character and the story's deeper message about power and respect for other beings.
