Summary

"The 'Scots Brigade' and Other Tales" by James Grant is a historical fiction anthology set in the late 1800s that centers on a military unit called the Scots Brigade within the Dutch Republic. The storyline keenly observes the emotional conflicts of Lieutenant Lewie Baronald, a young man trying to realize his love for Dolores while grappling with political unrest and a disapproving family member which serves as the stories' fulcrum. Facing his uncle's disapproval because of past disappointments as he confesses his great feelings for Dolores, the daughter of a countess, Lewie is soon faced with banishment by foreign service by his uncle in order to keep him distant from Dolores. Dolores, oblivious to the imminent separation, considers their love and the likely impact of a looming political climate and a potential battle between Britain and Holland. The story unfolds as it becomes apparent how fragile love and loyalty are when faced with political turmoil and personal sacrifice.
