Summary

"Aikenside" by Mary Jane Holmes is a captivating story about a young woman named Madeline Clyde, who tries to lift her family out of poverty. With the family home threatened by a looming mortgage and her grandfather facing potential ruin, Madeline decides her best chance is to become a schoolteacher. Though young, she bravely faces the social and political struggles within their village as she goes to be examined. Her success is critical, because in a society where young women's contributions are often unnoticed, Madeline's determination defines her path to either help or not help the people that matter the most to her.
