Summary

"The World Decision" by Robert Herrick is a historical exploration of Italy as it wrestled with the choice of entering World War I. The book looks at the deep uncertainties within Italy as the nation stood at the edge of war. Herrick paints detailed scenes of the mood in Naples and Rome, showing the worry and calmness that filled Italian society as people struggled with what it meant to be Italian, surrounded by political moves and growing rumors. Secret talks between Italian leaders, Austria, and the Allies, combined with events like the sinking of the Lusitania, stirred up strong feelings across the nation. This led to protests against what was seen as aggression from Germanic countries. The story shows how politicians, famous activists like the poet D’Annunzio, and everyday citizens all played a part, highlighting ideas of responsibility, love for one’s country, and the overall fight for what’s right.
