Summary

"Adventures in Criticism" by Arthur Quiller-Couch is a compilation of literary analyses penned towards the close of the 1800s, where well known English authors and poets, along with their impact on the world of literature, are discussed in the collection of essays. The author studies how literary critism is related to personal experience, literary review, and how culture influences the development and criticism of literature. The collection starts with a dedication to A.B. Walkley and shares the author's reasons for putting these essays together. Originally released in "The Speaker," Quiller-Couch's writings reflect his dedication to literature and how other writers affected the way he thought. He brings up how important it is to think critically about literature, and the happiness that comes from going back to works that are familiar. Using interesting language, he introduces literary greats like Chaucer and Shakespeare. He notes the importance of critical analysis, while also appreciating their talent as an artist.
