Summary

"Lord Kilgobbin" by Charles James Lever is a story that shows life in Ireland in the late 1800s. It follows the Kearney family, especially Mathew Kearney, who used to be wealthy but isn't anymore. He's trying to deal with being less important while taking care of his land and his kids, who are very different from each other. The story starts at Kilgobbin Castle, which isn't as grand as it used to be, just like Mathew's family. The book shows the problems between Mathew, his son Richard, and his daughter Kate, as they try to figure out who they are and what they want while Ireland is changing. Mathew is trying to hold on to the past, while Kate is smart and takes charge of the family's problems. Richard is proud and has big dreams, but they might not be possible because the family doesn't have much money, which could lead to problems later on in the story.

About the Author

Charles James Lever was an Irish novelist and raconteur, whose novels, according to Anthony Trollope, were just like his conversation.
