Summary

"The Piazza Tales" by Herman Melville is a collection of short stories from the 1800's that looks at what it means to be human, especially when people feel alone and how they fit into the world. One story tells of a person wanting to connect with nature and find beauty in the world. Another story is about a mysterious character who refuses to do what people expect, making us think about what society wants from us and how much freedom we really have. One of the stories starts with someone wishing their old house had a piazza so they could enjoy the pretty views around them. They really love nature and want a place where they can feel both comfortable and free. As the person thinks about building a piazza, they start to describe the nature around them in a beautiful way, which shows how much they care about the land. This start gives a peek into stories that will discover more about being human, what makes us comfortable, and what we really want.

About the Author

Herman Melville was an American novelist, short story writer, and poet of the American Renaissance period. Among his best-known works are Moby-Dick (1851); Typee (1846), a romanticized account of his experiences in Polynesia; and Billy Budd, Sailor, a posthumously published novella. At the time of his death Melville was not well known to the public, but 1919, the centennial of his birth, was the starting point of a Melville revival. Moby-Dick eventually would be considered one of the great American novels.
