Summary

"In Our First Year of War" by Woodrow Wilson is a collection of speeches and messages from when the United States first entered World War I. These writings offer a look into President Wilson's thinking as he guided the country into war, focusing on why America joined the fight and what it would take to win. The book starts with Wilson's second inaugural address, a serious speech about the challenges facing the nation because of the war in Europe. He explains America's role as a champion of freedom and democracy on the world stage. From there, the book moves to Wilson's message to Congress, where he lays out the reasons for declaring war on Germany, pointing to the dangers of German attacks and stressing the need for all Americans to come together to support the war effort.

About the Author

Thomas Woodrow Wilson was the 28th president of the United States, serving from 1913 to 1921. He was the only Democrat to serve as president during the Progressive Era when Republicans dominated the presidency and legislative branches. As president, Wilson changed the nation's economic policies and led the United States into World War I. He was the leading architect of the League of Nations, and his stance on foreign policy came to be known as Wilsonianism.
