Summary

"Silanus the Christian" by Edwin Abbott Abbott is a story set in the Roman Empire around 118 A.D., and follows Quintus Junius Silanus, who's being taught by Epictetus, as he comes to terms with his growing Christian faith alongside what he’s learning in philosophy. The story looks at ideas about faith and the relationship between thinking philosophically and having faith. Silanus starts his journey in Nicopolis to listen to Epictetus's teachings, where he learns about Stoicism, authority, and personal freedom. Silanus finds himself stuck between his philosophical studies and his growing Christian beliefs while talking with friends who have different views, leading to his intellectual and spiritual journey.
