Summary

"The Boy Scout" by Richard Harding Davis is a heartwarming story that emphasizes sacrifice and everyday kindness through the eyes of a Boy Scout. The book shares the experiences of boys learning together, spending time outdoors and helping others. The main story follows Jimmie Reeder, a Boy Scout headed to camp on Hunter's Island, who is determined to live by the Scout's motto and do a good turn. Even with the struggles of a long, hot walk in the outdoors, Jimmie refuses an easy ride from a man in a fancy car, so he can do a real good deed by helping others to walk alongside him. This decision and Jimmie’s consistent helpfulness sets off a series of positive changes in the lives of several other individuals. In general, this tale is about altruism and how acts of niceness, no matter how small, can affect others lives for the better.
