Fanshawe

"Fanshawe" by Nathaniel Hawthorne is a tale set in a small New England college and tells a story about love, learning, and what society expects. The story is about Fanshawe, a student who likes to be alone, and Ellen Langton, a beautiful young woman whose father recently passed away. As the story begins, Harley College is shown as a quiet place that is having trouble getting new students. Dr. Melmoth, the college president, is a kind man who takes care of Ellen after her father dies. When Ellen arrives, the male students, especially Edward Walcott and Fanshawe, start to feel different things, like jealousy and love, making for a story filled with feelings against the backdrop of the old college.
