The story centers around Dixon Wells, who is tormented by guilt after missing the launch of the rocket "Baikal," which then crashed. Driven by the machine "subjunctivisor," invented by his old mentor, Dixon explores different realities to see what might have happened if he had caught the rocket. He remembers meeting Joanna Caldwell, a woman who was on the rocket, and finds out she lived through the crash but married the man who rescued her.
