Summary

"Main Currents in Nineteenth Century Literature - 4. Naturalism in England" by Georg Brandes is a literary study that looks at how Naturalism appeared in 19th-century English writing and its effects on writers and their books. The book goes over the change from old-fashioned writing styles to ones that focused on showing life as it really was, mirroring the changes in politics and society. It starts by explaining how Naturalism was a shared movement across Europe at the time and how it pushed back against older, more traditional ideas from the Enlightenment. The book points out how events like the war with France and the Industrial Revolution made people want to write more about personal experiences and the world around them. Important writers like Wordsworth and Coleridge are mentioned as people who broke away from the writing rules of the 1700s, choosing to write about nature and everyday people, which helped establish Naturalism in English literature.

About the Author

Georg Morris Cohen Brandes was a Danish critic and scholar who greatly influenced Scandinavian and European literature from the 1870s through the turn of the 20th century. He is seen as the theorist behind the "Modern Breakthrough" of Scandinavian culture. At the age of 30, Brandes formulated the principles of a new realism and naturalism, condemning hyper-aesthetic writing and also fantasy in literature. His literary goals were shared by some other authors, among them the Norwegian "realist" playwright Henrik Ibsen.
