Summary

"Almayer's Folly: A Story of an Eastern River" by Joseph Conrad, is a tale set in the late 1800s focused on a Dutch trader named Kaspar Almayer whose grand ambitions crash against the harsh reality of the Eastern world he inhabits. Facing constant disappointment and hopelessness, Almayer's story explores the clash between his desire for wealth and the complexities of his relationships with his family and the local people. The novel opens with a look into Almayer’s dreams of wealth and freedom, sitting by the river. Flashbacks hint at his past in Macassar and reveal how he wants to escape his circumstances, especially for his daughter, Nina. The building tension and the introduction of characters, such as his friend Dain, highlight the increasing difficulties Almayer must deal with, painting a picture of cultural collisions and a wild, untamed setting.

About the Author

Joseph Conrad was a Polish-British novelist and story writer. He is regarded as one of the greatest writers in the English language and although he did not speak English fluently until his twenties, he became a master prose stylist who brought a non-English sensibility into English literature. He wrote novels and stories, many in nautical settings that depict crises of human individuality in the midst of what he saw as an indifferent, inscrutable and amoral world.
