"Home Lights and Shadows" by T. S. Arthur is a story that looks at the difficult parts of marriage and family life long ago, during a different time in America. It mainly shows how tough it was for women who were expected to follow all the rules and wishes of their husbands. The book starts with the big fight between Mrs. Barbara Uhler and Mr. Herman Uhler, where she wants to be her own person and he expects her to take care of the house and do what he says. As they go through money problems, not understanding each other, and the stress of what society expects of them, their marriage has lots of ups and downs. Even with all the hard times and arguments, there are also moments of love and forgiveness, showing how both the husband and wife change as people and as a couple through all their struggles together.
