Summary

"The Life and Death of John of Barneveld, Advocate of Holland" by John Lothrop Motley reveals the story of John of Barneveld, a key politician in a time of great unrest before the Thirty Years’ War. It explores Barneveld's attempts to bring together divided Protestant groups in Europe to stand against the growing power of Catholic forces, especially Spain. The book starts by showing Barneveld's early warnings about Catholic armies gathering in Germany and the danger they pose to Protestant countries. He sends messages to diplomats telling them to get ready for war and unite Protestant leaders, who don't seem to realize the danger. Barneveld's sharp observations show he understands the complicated political situation, including the relationships between European countries, and predict the terrible war to come. His letters emphasize how important it is for countries to work together to fight against the increasing control of the Catholic League, while also showing the difficulties he faces, especially from unhelpful allies like England and France.
