Summary

"The Wide, Wide World" by Susan Warner is a story from the 1800s about a young girl, Ellen Montgomery, whose life is turned upside down when her family has to move to Europe because her mother is sick and her father lost a legal battle. The book looks at big ideas like love, giving up things for others, and growing as a person, especially through Ellen's close but complicated bond with her mother. Early on, Ellen shows her innocence and sadness when she asks her mother about the family's problems, even as they prepare to separate and this moment shows how much they love each other and hints at the hard times ahead. As this young girl tries to be brave while dealing with her fears and wanting to take care of her mother, she begins to grow up, a change that will steer her path throughout the novel.
