Summary

"Gudrid the Fair: A Tale of the Discovery of America" by Maurice Hewlett is a story about Gudrid, a clever and lovely woman from Iceland tied to the Viking voyages to America. The novel combines Viking tales with Gudrid's journey of love and marriage as she helps build a new home in Greenland. At the start, Gudrid’s father, Thorbeorn, copes with getting old and owing money, while also being proud of his daughter. Gudrid, who is fifteen, has to deal with finding a husband and what her family wants. Her father is very protective, which causes problems when he finds her talking to a young man, making it more complicated for Gudrid as she travels through love and challenges in the early Norse world.
