Summary

"The Sea Mystery" by Freeman Wills Crofts is a thrilling detective story set in the early 1900s. The plot thickens when Mr. Morgan, an ordinary tin-plate works manager, stumbles upon a shocking secret during a peaceful fishing getaway with his son, Evan, when they pull up a crate from the depths containing a corpse. The unsettling finding throws their lives into turmoil and ignites an intense investigation led by the determined Inspector French, who is tasked with figuring out who the dead man is and how he ended up at the bottom of the sea. The tranquil beginning, showcasing the father and son’s fishing trip in Burry Inlet, Wales, is quickly replaced by suspense as the Morgans unexpectedly hook the waterlogged crate and haul it up, when they are met with a foul odor and the gruesome realization that a decaying body is inside. Mr. Morgan, trying to protect his son from the terrible sight, decides to report it to the authorities when they return home. The initial part of the story builds suspense, introducing not just a confusing murder case but also Mr. Morgan’s personal battle with the horrible truth he has uncovered.
