Summary

"The Tremendous Event" by Maurice Leblanc is a story set in the early 20th century about Simon Dubosc, a daring young Frenchman, whose life takes a sharp turn because of strange waterspouts causing shipwrecks in the English Channel. As the story builds, it explores love, peril, and the resilience of humanity. Early in the book, Simon talks with his friend Edward Rolleston at a golf course about news of ships sinking due to strange weather, like gigantic waterspouts. While Simon tries to understand these troubling incidents, he also deals with his love for Isabel, the daughter of an English noble. The danger from the sea and his personal challenges regarding love and societal status create a compelling beginning, priming Simon for a journey that will test both his courage and character.
