Summary

"Desert Air" by Robert Hichens is a story about how a place can change a person. It follows a narrator and his friend, Henry Marnier, to a faraway town in the Sahara Desert. The narrator watches as the serious Marnier slowly gets pulled in by the intense atmosphere of the desert. After meeting a mysterious dancer and experiencing the local culture, Marnier gets more connected to the desert, which leads to him tragically dying during a huge sandstorm; raising thoughts on the dangerous power of nature to twist people's minds and cause bad outcomes.

Robert Smythe Hichens was an English journalist, novelist, music lyricist, short story writer, music critic and collaborated on successful plays. He is best remembered as a satirist of the "Naughty Nineties".
