Summary

"Ran Away to Sea" by Captain Mayne Reid is a tale of youthful yearning and harsh reality, about a boy who leaves behind his comfortable life for the allure of the sea, only to confront the brutal existence of a 19th-century sailor. Driven by a thirst for adventure, the sixteen-year-old protagonist finds himself aboard the "Pandora," where his romantic dreams are shattered by a cruel captain and hostile crew. The voyage takes a dark turn when the boy discovers the ship's involvement in the slave trade, forcing him to grapple with the morality of his situation and sparking a desperate quest for freedom, aided by a kind sailor named Ben Brace. The narrative explores themes of regret, survival, and the loss of innocence as the protagonist confronts the horrific consequences of his choices and fights to escape the clutches of a vile enterprise.

About the Author

Thomas Mayne Reid was a British novelist who fought in the Mexican–American War (1846–1848). His many works on American life describe colonial policy in the American colonies, the horrors of slave labour, and the lives of American Indians. "Captain" Reid wrote adventure novels akin to those by Frederick Marryat (1792-1848), and Robert Louis Stevenson (1850-1894). They were set mainly in the American West, Mexico, South Africa, the Himalayas, and Jamaica. He was an admirer of Lord Byron. His novel Quadroon (1856), an anti-slavery work, was later adapted as a play entitled The Octoroon (1859) by Dion Boucicault and produced in New York.
